The Importance of Engagement Photography by DSWfoto

The Importance of Engagement Photography

Engagement photography has had a major resurgence in recent years. No longer are couples going in to a photography studio for a formal portrait session so that they can get that one picture. That one picture that eventually ends up somewhere in the back of the newspaper, between the Ford dealer advertisement and the daily horoscopes.

Couples are starting to have fun with their engagement photo session, trying to think of ways to show off who they really are. Portrait studios have been replaced by beaches, football stadiums, theme parks and abandoned factories. A couple can let their imagination soar as they think of ideas. One couple recently gained a lot of attention by recreating the courtship from the Pixar movie Up! While another couple decided to fantasize what their life would be like together in the 540 square foot home in Ikea.

I’ve always said that engagement sessions make for a great date night. You get to have fun together being celebrities in front of the camera. Intermixed in all of the fun is a sprinkling of love and romance, and it makes for a great time. Many couples celebrate their engagement photo session by going out to a nice meal afterwards. And, why not? You already look your best! Go have fun!

From a photographer’s perspective, I *LOVE* doing engagement photo sessions. So much so, that I often times include them with, or significantly reduce the cost of them depending on photo package chosen. It’s a great chance to bond with the bride and groom before their wedding day. I also find that photos go so much smoother on their wedding day, because we have all worked with one another. At a recent wedding, I said to the bride, “Can you do that thing that..” and she cut me off and immediately struck the amazing pose that I was looking for.

From a couple’s perspective, it’s a great way to audition a wedding photographer. I encourage couples to have an engagement session to make sure that the photographer is the right fit for them. Also, unless you are professional models, you probably aren’t comfortable posing in front of a camera, especially as a couple. This gives you a great chance to work together and shake off those cobwebs. Because, the lights will definitely be flashing on your wedding day!

Make Up for the DIY (Do It Yourself) Bride

If you're a "Do It Yourself" kind of girl, I may venture to guess that your wedding is no exception. Whether for financial reasons or just the hesitation of letting go, you may decide to take wedding day beauty into your own hands. Here is where I can help. Let me give you a few insights into creating a picture perfect bridal photo. There's nothing wrong with doing it yourself, if you're well-informed and excellent at applying your own makeup. I've been doing makeup for well over 20 years and even still I would never attempt to do my own makeup for my wedding day. But to those who are more adventurous, I will provide you with a few important tips. Flawless makeup begins with flawless skin. Get routine facials, wear sunscreen, avoid harmful tanning, drink lots of water, watch what you eat and take care of your skin. We can always make our skin darker with bronzers and spray-on tans but once you damage your skin with UV rays, there's no way i...

The highs and lows of a wedding budget

The "dirty" word: If you have ever planned a wedding or have been around someone planning a wedding, there is one single word that makes even the most level-headed bride cringe. Budget. There, I said it. Cut and dry. Now that it's out in the open, let's discuss exactly why that word brings out the inner bridezilla. To start off with, ask any number of brides what their budget is, and I guarantee you will get just as many answers. Budgets can range from under $2,000 on up and past $200,000. It doesn't mean that any amount is better than another. Every wedding has a budget because every couple draws the dollar line somewhere. A budget just defines what you have to spend. Period. Nothing more, nothing less. A bigger budget doesn't make any one bride better than another, nor any wedding less important. So in short, every bride is a budget bride no matter the dollar amount. When you think of it that way, it can wrangle in the green-eyed...

Red Apple Lipstick

I recently received the cutest makeup package in the mail. It was from Red Apple Lipstick . The items were wrapped in “apple” green tissue paper and placed inside a small burlap-style drawstring pouch. The products included full-size versions of a lipstick, lip gloss, lip liner pencil and a sample lipstick with disposable lip brush. I grabbed the lip pencil first. This was the R-evolution lip liner and the color was Nude. Just as the name implies, it’s the perfect shade to create a neutral lip. The pencil went on creamy, without tugging or stretching the lips and the color stayed true to form. With a matte finish, it creates the perfect daytime finish. Next, was the full-size lipstick in New York, a brown based nude with orange undertones that blended superbly with the Nude pencil. I really liked the consistency of the lipstick and the smooth results it provided. It has no shimmer and is an ideal choice for the workplace. It’s a fantastic color option for day or night. The lip gloss wa...
