So you wanna be a Makeup Artist?

With an increased interest in makeup artists from shows such as Face Off and Blush, I receive emails all the time with questions on how to follow a career as a makeup artist.
To begin with, let's define a makeup artist as someone who makes money by solely doing makeup. They do not rely on a "day job" and they are not "weekend warriors". I would refer to those as the hobby makeup artist.

With that being said, your best bet is to begin with your network. Learn for those with the experience. Being a makeup artist is much more than just knowing how to apply makeup. It's a business.

Start with a great networking event such as the Artist Summit 2013. It's being held October 6th through the 9th. It's a definite must attend event for those makeup artists who are serious about their career.
This Pro-Focused event will inspire you to move forward with your artistry. It will impact you like never before. You will be surrounded by 200 artists with similar drive …

Loving Bride Artashea

Some makeup jobs go by and although I cherish each day with my clients, there are those who provide me with such enormous thanks that it truly makes me love my job. This week I have been blessed with receiving not just one, but two heartfelt, warm and touching love notes from recent brides.
I relayed the first one in an earlier blog post and today, I received a very special note on my Facebook page from Artashea. These two beautiful thank you notes, are just what I needed!!

"Has anyone ever told you that you are absolutely amazing? Well, you are! I just want to thank you again for being with me moments before I said "I do". You did much more than your job required of you. Not only did you apply flawless make-up and perfectly cover up my wrist tattoo, you unknowingly provided comfort during a very stressful time on my big day. You made me laugh, helped keep me at ease, and assured me that everything would be just fine...the way things were meant to be. Before Saturday yo…

This makes it all worthwhile....

Some days, like today, I'll get a special love note from one of my past brides and in those few moments, reading the touching words, I realize that this is why I love my job! Wishing the newlyweds many, many years of love, happiness and health!! xoxoxo
"Stephanie,

I would like to thank you so much for the wonderful job you did on my make up! You did such an amazing job, I never knew I could look like that! I hardly recognize myself in photos! :)
Everyone complimented me on my make up and I raved about you! Not only did you do a great job on my make up but you were a really cool person to meet! I absolutely enjoyed chatting with you and meeting you. You are so relaxed and professional and I really appreciate you making me look my best on my special day!

Thank you so much!Kelly Stevens Dennis"

Red Apple Lipstick

I recently received the cutest makeup package in the mail. It was from Red Apple Lipstick. The items were wrapped in “apple” green tissue paper and placed inside a small burlap-style drawstring pouch.

The products included full-size versions of a lipstick, lip gloss, lip liner pencil and a sample lipstick with disposable lip brush.

I grabbed the lip pencil first. This was the R-evolution lip liner and the color was Nude. Just as the name implies, it’s the perfect shade to create a neutral lip. The pencil went on creamy, without tugging or stretching the lips and the color stayed true to form. With a matte finish, it creates the perfect daytime finish.

Next, was the full-size lipstick in New York, a brown based nude with orange undertones that blended superbly with the Nude pencil. I really liked the consistency of the lipstick and the smooth results it provided. It has no shimmer and is an ideal choice for the workplace. It’s a fantastic color option for day or night.

The lip gloss was pa…
