Wedding Beauty Prep: Questions to Ask Your Hair & Makeup Stylist

 Practical & Timeline Info

Time: Coordinate the beauty specialist’s arrival time, how much time you’re allocating for hair and makeup (usually 1.5–2 hours for hair, 45–90 min for makeup), the ceremony start time, and what time you need everyone to be completed by. (Pro tip: Be sure to consider ceremony travel time and allocate enough time for getting into dresses, shoes and jewelry.)

Order: Who sits in the makeup chair first and who will be last? (Pro tip: the bride should never be left for last. If you’re running short on time, her makeup and hair will be rushed.) Schedule the bride somewhere in the middle to allow time to get dressed and relax. Plan for flower girls or younger bridal party members to go last (they’ll be less likely to mess up their finished looks).

Bridal Preview: If you opt for a pre-consultation, schedule it for the same time as the wedding day to get a feel for how long the makeup and hair will last. Confirm what you liked/disliked from the consultation. (Pro tip: Wear white or a similar shade to your wedding dress to get a true feel of how your makeup will compliment the dress color.)

Weather concerns: If your ceremony and reception will be outdoors or in a humid environment, ask for humidity-resistant products, strong-hold hairspray, or setting spray.

Touch-ups: Where will touch-up products be kept and who will do quick fixes (lip color, shine, flyaways).

The Vibe & Details

Wedding aesthetic: Describe the overall style of your wedding (e.g., romantic garden party, classic black-tie, modern minimalist).

Reference photos: Show 2-3 specific photos of looks you love, but be sure to tell them exactly what you like about each picture (e.g., "I love this soft, dewy glow, but not the heavy contouring"). Include angles (front, side, back).

What you dislike: Be completely honest about what you hate. If you dislike heavy eyeliner, red lipstick, or stiff updos, let them know immediately.

Dress & accessories: Share photos of your wedding dress, veil, headpiece, earrings, and necklace. This helps with neckline compatibility and overall balance. Gold vs. silver or platinum jewelry can affect the harmony of the color options.

Hair: Be sure to share whether you are using flowers or other hair adornments. If you plan on adding hair extensions on the day of the wedding, discuss the options in advance with your stylist and set aside enough time for the application. (Pro tip: When purchasing extensions, opt for human hair instead of synthetic. If you want wedding day curls, try to purchase pre-curled extensions.)

Hair & Makeup Specifics

Hair texture and history: Describe your natural hair type (fine, thick, curly). Mention how well your hair normally holds a curl or if it tends to get frizzy in humidity. Disclose your natural hair color and any recent treatments (color, highlights, keratin, etc.). Provide details on the length and any growing-out layers or bangs. List out the products you normally use and what works/doesn’t.

Skin type and concerns: Explain whether your skin is dry, oily, acne-prone, or sensitive. Mention if you have any product allergies or need to cover specific blemishes or tattoos. Detail your current skincare routine and recent treatments (facials, peels, Botox, fillers, lash lifts, brow tinting). Note any problem areas (redness, dark circles, hyperpigmentation) you want covered or minimized. Be sure to make reference of your preferred foundation finish (dewy, matte, etc.) and the coverage level (full, sheer, subtle, etc.)

Personal products: Tell them if you have a specific holy-grail foundation or lipstick from your own makeup bag that you insist on using

Venue & Photography

Lighting: Explain where you will be getting ready (e.g., a dark hotel room vs. a brightly lit venue room with natural light) so they can plan adjust the makeup accordingly. Point out if the photographs will be taken in the evening, under candlelight, during golden hour, with flash photography, and up close.

Color palette: Provide reference photos of the bridesmaid dresses, flowers, and venue colors so makeup/hair complements everything. Include reference images of the groom’s attire for color balance.

Photography plans: Mention if your wedding is indoors or outdoors, and whether you are doing a daytime or evening ceremony, which affects how the makeup reads on camera.

Tears and sweat: Let them know if you need long-wear, waterproof products, especially for outdoor summer ceremonies

Lifestyle & Comfort

How long it needs to last: Dancing, hugging, crying, heat, etc.

Comfort level: Nothing too tight/pulling, no heavy lashes if you blink a lot, etc. Mention if you wear false lashes daily, occasionally or never.

Your normal routine: Be specific with how you usually wear your hair/makeup so the wedding version feels like an elevated version of you. Do you wear full makeup on a daily basis or just a minimal amount? Is your typically hair parted to the side or do you tend to tuck it behind your ears?

Cultural or religious elements: Any specific traditions, hairstyles, or makeup customs to incorporate.

Dressing: Are you able to step into your wedding gown or must it be pulled over your head? (Pro tip: When putting your dress on over your head, sit on a chair, have two helpers drop the dress over you while holding your hands up above your head and with your elbows point out from in front of your face. This keeps the fabric from touching your hair and makeup.)

Pro Tips for Smooth Communication

Inspo: Create a shared Pinterest board or folder with all references. (Pro tip: Refer to actual images from the stylists own portfolio. Hairstylists and makeup artists often can’t copy a photo 100% because every person’s hair texture, face shape, head shape, and dress are different. And with so many photos now created using AI, the image you may be referencing is not a true representation of a human.)

Confirm: Send everything at least 1–2 weeks in advance (and again a few days before).

Be specific but collaborative: Say “I’d love this but softer around the face” instead of being overly rigid. Instead of giving commands, frame your requests as a team effort. Show that you trust their professional skills and are open to their input.

Ask questions: “What products will you use?” “How will you handle humidity?” “Do you bring backup options?” “Will you be the one providing the services, or do you send a team”

Pro move: Bring a printed “cheat sheet with your top 3 must-haves and 2 things to avoid on the wedding morning. Stylists appreciate it.

Red Apple Lipstick

I recently received the cutest makeup package in the mail. It was from Red Apple Lipstick . The items were wrapped in “apple” green tissue paper and placed inside a small burlap-style drawstring pouch. The products included full-size versions of a lipstick, lip gloss, lip liner pencil and a sample lipstick with disposable lip brush. I grabbed the lip pencil first. This was the R-evolution lip liner and the color was Nude. Just as the name implies, it’s the perfect shade to create a neutral lip. The pencil went on creamy, without tugging or stretching the lips and the color stayed true to form. With a matte finish, it creates the perfect daytime finish. Next, was the full-size lipstick in New York, a brown based nude with orange undertones that blended superbly with the Nude pencil. I really liked the consistency of the lipstick and the smooth results it provided. It has no shimmer and is an ideal choice for the workplace. It’s a fantastic color option for day or night. The lip gloss wa...
